World Languages

Dr. Nicole Montellese, Chairperson
(516) 792-4027

The  Department of World Languages at Hewlett High School believes in a communicative approach to language learning.  Students are encouraged to speak, listen to, read, and write in the language daily to increase proficiency.  Student progress is monitored by teachers to help students succeed and reflect on daily progress.  In addition, students explore countries around the world as they discover new cultures along with the language.

The Department offers courses in Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish, ASL, and English as a New Language.

NYS Standards for World Language Education*

Standard 1: Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.
Standard 2: Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.    *Note:  NYSED has adopted new standards for World Language Education.  Implementation will begin in grade 7 in August 2023.  For more information on the new standards, click here.

Hewlett High School is a proud sponsor of the

New York State Seal of Biliteracy.

The NYSSB recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and one or more world languages.  The intent of the NYSSB is to encourage the study of languages, to identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, to provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and placement, to prepare students with twenty-first century skills, to recognize the value of language instruction, and to affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society.  Successful candidates will earn three points in English and three points in each world language from a points matrix, which includes course grades, national and state exams, transcripts, and culminating projects.  The NYSSB takes the form of a Seal on the student's diploma and a medal worn at graduation.

Congratulations to our 2022 NYS Seal of Biliteracy Recipients!
