Special Education
Welcome to the Learning Center!
At the Learning Center we provide an array of services and supports for students with disabilities-as determined by the Committee on Special Education. The continuum of services encompasses integrated co-teaching, special classes, support services and/or related services. Teachers in the Learning Center teach regents level content classes and specialized classes. They provide support to all the students in their caseloads and function as case managers and liaisons with general education staff and parents.
The goal of the program is to provide the opportunity for each student to maximize academic, social, and emotional development. Special education teachers work with small groups of designated students on specific skill development such as reading, writing, mathematics, organizational and study skills. Teachers and staff focus on self-advocacy skills for all students and foster this important skill in all aspects of learning. Assistance is also provided in helping students meet the New York State Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for particular subject classes. Skill development is grounded in meeting the specific IEP goals, learning and social emotional needs as well as testing accommodations for each student. Learning Center teachers maintain open communication with parents, academic teachers, and Pupil Personnel Services staff in order to ensure that our students achieve academic success during their high school years.
